Registering a food business in Victoria
Safe Food Victoria says local councils are responsible for registering and regulating most food businesses in Victoria, including cafes and restaurants. Your council classifies the premises by its food safety risk and tells you whether you must register or only notify, and whether you need a food safety program or a food safety supervisor. A business that registers renews every year. Keep your registration or notification with your other documents.
Food safety supervisor
Safe Food Victoria says class 1, most class 2 and class 3A food premises must have a food safety supervisor, with a Statement of Attainment from a registered training organisation. Class 3 and class 4 premises are not required to have one. Your council decides your class. Hospitality Shield holds the certificate with your other documents.
Food safety programs
Safe Food Victoria says a class 1 food business must have a food safety program that is audited each year. A class 2 retail or food service business needs one if it does certain things, such as sous vide cooking or catering away from the premises. Your council tells you which applies to you.
Records Hospitality Shield keeps
Standard 3.2.2A is a national standard. It can ask a venue in Victoria for a trained food safety supervisor, trained food handlers and records of key activities. Hospitality Shield keeps those records with checklists and temperature logs, training certificates and documents, and prints them as a record pack for any dates.
Hospitality Shield lists the registration and supervisor documents for your own state. We have researched Western Australia in the most depth, so confirm any duty that is particular to your state with the regulator named below.
